Why they need your support
The National Brain Appeal raises funds for The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in Queen Square, London.
More than 12 million people in the UK suffer from a neurological condition either from birth, through injury, or a slowly developing illness.
Last year all funds raised from Pyjama Party were directed to our Operating Theatres Appeal. We pledged to raise £4 million
as part of a £24 million upgrade of the existing theatre suites and the creation of two new theatres. The money raised will
fund a new specialist Complex Spinal Theatre. We have also funded a new flexible education and office facility for the
neurosurgeons, which has now been in use since April – the space enables clinical and research discussions and training.
The final part of the project we have supported is a new ward to accommodate patients after surgery – and building work is already underway!
However there is still a huge demand for more space, equipment and research to be funded here at Queen Square,
which benefits patients across the UK.
How the new facilities will benefit all neurosurgical Patients
National Hospital is leading the research into implanting stem cells into the spine which will restore the use of a
patient’s paralysed limb (commonly caused by road traffic accidents) Alongside this they are pioneering surgical techniques
for nerve repair operations. The next step is to marry the research and the surgery, with a specialised spinal
operating theatre, state of the art equipment and appropriate post operative facilities.
